Attabad Lake Hunza Valley Pakistan

Attabad Lake is a lake and one of the biggest tourist attractions point in Gojal Valley, Hunza, Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan.

Attabad Lake History:

Attabad Lake was created in January 2010 as a result of the Attabad Disaster. Attabad Lake has become one of the biggest tourist attractions in Gilgit-Baltistan because of the offering activities like jet skiing, boating, fishing, and other recreational activities.

Attabad Lake in Hunza was created in less romantic circumstances. The tragedy behind the lake is bigger than the landslide that created it. On 4 January 2010, a massive landslide dammed the Hunza River and the Hunza River flow was stopped. As a result the Lake was created, that’s why it is also called the Disaster Lake. Villages were either entirely or partly submerged, more than 20 people were killed, around 6,000 were displaced and thousands were affected in other ways. Damming of Hunza River resulted in, five villages north of the barrier were flooded. Another result of the calamity change was the formation of the Attabad Lake in Gojal Hunza Valley.

Some other facts about Attabad Lake are;

Maximum depth of the lake is 109 meters. Its Length is 20.9 km. Water capacity of Attabad Lake is 407 million mΒ³. Its Location is Attabad, Gojal Hunza Valley, Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan. It is about half an hour east of Karimabad, the capital of the Hunza District in the Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan.

  1. Thank you for sharing the history and the beautiful images of this lake. We often don’t consider the terrible human cost of such beauty, so while I appreciate its grandeur I pray the people affected have received all they need and that those lost in the disaster Rest in Peace.

    1. Ameen, Yes, you are right Carol, human cost is sometimes not considered and ignored. Though it’s a great loss.
      Thanks for your kind prayers and condolance to these affected people. Govt has given support to them but the human loss you know is un recover able.
